African American Art- Beginning of a Legacy

Art is an impeccable skill which can transfigure creative imagination into reality. Art is present in every visible feature of our world because each and everything that we can see has a shape, color and purpose. This quality makes art an abstract and colorful aspect in the life of human beings. Art has many forms and music and dance are a part of it. While music is the art related with sounds, dance is a representation of the sounds through movements. Even though many people classify art, music and dance differently but all of them has one thing common which is the interpretation of human emotions.

Visual art is related with colors, sketches and paintings, but its history goes back into the ancient times. Since the medieval period, Art has been evolving and providing new forms generation after generation. One of the art forms that came into existence during the 1800s was the African American art. Africans were held as slaves in the United States of America during the century of 1800. During this period, every African American was forced to create artistic crafts such as pottery, silver pieces and duvets. Slaves were allowed to sell the products to keep the profits in the period off of their work and buy their freedom. In middle of this cruel atmosphere, there were many Americans who did not mistreated their slaves, instead they provided private tutoring for them to excel in the field of art.

Several Black Artists were born after these private tutoring lessons, which formed the solid base of the African American art. In 1860, the slavery became the reason of the civil war in America. The nation got divided among two groups, The Union and Confederate states of America. Confederate group declared succession from American and the war lasted from 1861-1865 leaving over 600,000 people dead from both sides. After the Civil war got over, Slavery was abolished in America and African Americans were giving equal rights in USA. After the freedom, many black artists came forward with their astonishing pieces of art. A lot of the paintings got famous in several museums in Europe. However, it took time to be acknowledged in America.

A Significant Tale of Art

Before the civil war in the United States of America, African American people were slaves. They were forced to make various crafts such as blankets, pottery and silver pieces etc. This hectic schedule slowly developed their skill as artists. Many of the slave owners allowed African American slaves to sell artifacts created during their free period in order to buy freedom from their masters. Some of the Masters, who were sensitive, arranged private tutoring in art for the slaves to excel in the field.  This became the provenance of the African American art.

The period of 1861-1865 witnessed a civil war in America.  Seven states from the south declared secession from American and declared themselves as the confederate states of America. Influencing many other states, a dispute slowly turned into a war between the confederate and the union (the states which did not declare secession). The work lasted for four long years leaving thousands of people dead from both sides. The sole reason for the war was the abolishment of slavery in America. After the end of civil war, the slavery system was eradicated and African Americans were given proper civil rights. This opened the gates for all the black artists to show case their artistic value to the world. The paintings from many black artists got attention in Europe and many other parts of the world.

The Heritage of African American Art

African American art is a popular art form among all the diverse arts presented by humans in the world. It has its own unique factor in the field of art and talks about the different social, economic, political and human conditions in the world irrespective of the timeline. v  Horace Pippin, Romare Bearden, Jacob Lawrence were the artists of 1950’s that were able to put their mark on the New York galleries.

v  Larry D. Alexander, Laylah Ali, Amalia Amaki, Emma Amos, Kadir Nelson, Frank Morrison became the newest wave of African American artists of the contemporary world which followed their professional ancestors and innovated a new chapter in the history of Black Art.

All these names are of the greatest artist of African American culture, which is not based on a pleasant history. The participation of African Americans in the field of art began at a very disturbing note. During the 18^th century, the Africans were slaves in America. It was a legal practice which imposed the black people to create iron pieces, quilts, silver and pottery as part of their slavery. A lot of the slave owners allowed the slaves to sell off their pieces of art created during their off time to buy freedom from their masters. With time black people harnessed their skill in the fields of art. A lot of merciful masters encouraged the artistic side of the African Americans and provided them with private tutoring that enhanced their skill of crafting.

During the period 1861 to 1865, a civil war took place which was fought between Confederate States of America which was a group of states that had declared succession from America and the Union which was the group who opposed them. The war was fought mainly because of the slavery system. After the 4 years of bloodshed and over 600,000 people dead from both sides brought freedom to slaves in America which eventually gave rise to the Black Art.

African Americans were captive during the civil war in America and were compelled to create artifacts for living, various objects like iron pieces, ceramics, duvets and silver were prepared on the daily basis. A lot of Slave owners offered African Americans to sell the crafts and keep all the profits for the ones they made in their free time.

Some of the more “human” families provided private tutoring to their slaves and encouraged them to Opt art professionally, it lead to the rise in the African American Art and bestowed the early artists like Robert M. Douglas Jr. and Joshua Johnson.

When the civil war ended the slavery was abolished completely which provided opportunity for the black art to be displayed in the art museums. However, the art did not gain much popularity in the United States for a long period but was noticed instantly in the European countries and was displayed in most of the art museum in Europe.
